About Volunteer Tutors Organisation (VTO)

VTO Mission: is to have a significant impact on the education and lives of children and young people who need it most. We inspire achievement and build confidence by using trained volunteer tutors to work with children on a one-to-one basis so that they can get the most from their education. Most of the children we help are between the ages of 10 and 14, although we do cover the whole school age range from 6 – 16 years. Most of the children need help with basic reading, spelling, writing and number work, although in the older age groups, we do sometimes need tutors who can support with more specialised subjects. Tutoring is a wonderful way for adults to help children learn. Tutoring offers an opportunity for one-on-one interaction, focused support for specific learning needs, and a welcome break from typical classroom situations. It also supports the development of the child or young person's confidence, motivation, and social skills. Tutoring support is for one hour per week in term time and could be in person in the pupil’s home or a community setting such as a library, or online via our tutoring platform.

We recruit, train, place, resource, and support volunteer tutors, to give one-to-one educational help and guidance to children and young people who need it most. Our tutors are adults of all ages and backgrounds and enjoy establishing supportive relationships to encourage learning with our pupils.

To become a VTO tutor you need:
• Good levels of numeracy and/or literacy in English
• Capability and enthusiasm to communicate and work with children and young people.

Application Process
• Online application followed by an interview
• Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) check (VTO does this)
• Online home learning and online group training session
• After successful completion of our training and receipt of two suitable references, you will be paired with a pupil.
