Summary

Through the use of player photo cards, videos, and other memorabilia, Football Memories supports the elderly and vulnerable to reminiscence about days gone by.

Detailed description

Football Memories and other reminiscence activities are designed to engage with elderly and vulnerable people who are either socially isolated and/or living with dementia or another neurodegenerative condition.

Our Football Memories provision is specifically tailored to those with an interest in Football and, through the use of player picture cards, videos, sensory items, and other memorabilia from days gone by, our Delivery Assistants facilitate the session with a person-centered approach.

With information about the football players provided on the back of the cards, volunteers don’t necassarily need an in-depth knowledge of Scottish football, but instead require good soft skills to work with the individuals and their families who are in attendance.

There are talkers, listeners, and different personalities in the groups. Sometimes conversations start about football but might drift away from this topic... this is half the fun!

Sessions take place at the home of St Johnstone Football Club and other venues across the county. Most sessions are 60-minutes in length and typically delivered on a weekday morning.

Delivery Assistants will identify sessions resources from our collection and plan a session around these. They will set up the venue ahead of participant arrival and then lead and/or assist a reminiscence-based conversation. Volunteers will regularly liaise with each other and the wellbeing project lead.

Dementia Awareness training will be provided. With other training considered as you require.

The sessions can have a remarkable impact: "For the 30-minutes after the sessions I'm able to have a conversation with my husband again. But the moment we return home, it's back to aye and naw. I treasure those 30-minutes each week."

If you're somebody who has good interpersonal skills, confident leading and managing a conversation, able to include individuals who have limited communication, and you are punctual and reliable - please get in touch.
